Collaborative Writing Lab! with Patrick DeLeon

Class Description: Archive in Two Mediums - In this workshop, you will build new writing through the friction of image and text. We will look to Dianne Khoi Nguyen, Don Mee Choi, and Courtney Faye Taylor for approaches that treat photographs and documents as active materials, not fixed proof.

We will focus on the queerness of personal archive. We will treat queerness as a practice of return and revision. You will re-encounter what you inherited. You will notice what the record hides, misnames, or leaves out. You will write into gaps, blur, silence, and contradiction. You will let language interrupt the image and let the image pressure the language.

You will bring images from your own archive, and we will use them to generate drafts.

Together, we will:

• write captions that resist the photo’s “story”

• inventory details, then distort and re-sequence them

• erase and annotate, then build lines from what remains

• collage image and text into hybrid pages, then revise into poems or prose fragments

Bring 5 to 10 printed copies or photocopies of photos you want to work with. Do not bring originals. We will cut, tape, markup, and collage the images.

 This workshop is open to all skill levels.
